-GUIA DE EL REPORTED SPEECH

THE REPORTED SPEECH

////////////////////////////////////////////////////

WHENEVER SOMEBODY IS SPEAKING AND WE WANT TO DESCRIBE WHAT THAT PERSON HAS SAID, WE DO NOT REPEAT HIS OWN WORDS, INSTEAD WE REFER TO WHAT THE PERSON SAID IN THIS WAY:

" JOE SAID THAT HE WANTED TO BUY A CAR "

THIS IS CALLED REPORTED SPEECH OR INDIRECT STYLE, BECAUSE THE WORDS THAT JOE USED WERE:

" I WANT TO BUY A CAR "

THIS IS CALLED "DIRECT STYLE".

LET'S TAKE A LOOK AT SOME OF THE NECESSARY RULES THAT WE HAVE TO PERFORM TO CHANGE FROM DIRECT TO INDIRECT SPEECH:

I.- IF THE VERB OF THE MAIN SENTENCE IS IN THE PRESENT TENSE,

THERE IS NOT ANY VARIATIONS IN THE VERB OF THE SUBORDINATED SENTENCE WHEN THIS CHANGES TO THE REPORTED SPEECH.

FOR EXAMPLE:

HELEN SAYS, " I LOVE GOING JOGGING "

HELEN SAYS THAT SHE LOVES GOING JOGGING

IN THIS KIND OF POSSITIVE SENTENCES WE HAVE TO USE THE WORD THAT AS A RELATIVE CLAUSE, BETWEEN THE MAIN AND THE SUBORDINATED SENTENCE.

II.- IF THE VERB OF THE MAIN SENTENCE IS IN THE PAST TENSE, THERE ARE SOME CHANGES IN THE VERB OF THE SUBORDINATED SENTENCE WHEN THIS CHANGES TO THE REPORTED SPEECH:

1) SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE CHANGES TO SIMPLE PAST TENSE.

FOR EXAMPLE:

PAUL SAID, " I LIVE IN THIS CITY "

PAUL SAID THAT HE LIVED IN THIS CITY.

2) SIMPLE PAST TENSE CHANGES TO PAST PERFECT.

FOR EXAMPLE:

TOM SAID, " SUSAN TOOK A TRIP TO BOSTON "

TOM SAID THAT SUSAN HAD TAKEN A TRIP TO BOSTON.

3) PRESENT PERFECT CHANGES TO PAST PERFECT ALSO.

FOR EXAMPLE:

MIKE SAID, " PETER HAS WRITTEN A GOOD BOOK "

MIKE SAID THAT PETER HAD WRITTEN A GOOD BOOK.

4) WILL CHANGES TO WOULD.

FOR EXAMPLE:

PATRICIA SAID, " MAC WILL STAY WITH US "

PATRICIA SAID THAT MAC WOULD STAY WITH THEM.

5) CAN CHANGES TO COULD.

FOR EXAMPLE:

ALI SAID, ' I CAN TYPE 45 WORDS PER MINUTE"

ALI SAID THAT HE COULD TYPE 45 WPM.

III.- WHEN THE SUBORDINATED SENTENCE MAKES A QUESTION WHICH

IS INICIATED BY THE VERB TO BE OR BY AN AUXILIARY VERB.

THE RELATIVE CLAUSE USED COULD BE IF OR WHETHER; THE LAST ONE IS USED ONLY WHEN THE WORD OR EXISTS IN THE SUBORDINATED SENTENCE.

FOR EXAMPLE:

FRANK ASKED KENNY, " ARE YOU FROM THE U.S.A.?"

FRANK ASKED KENNY IF HE WERE FROM THR U.S.A.

DEBBIE ASKED ROBERT, ARE YOU GLAD OR SAD?"

DEBBIE ASKED ROBERT WHETHER HE WAS GLAD OR SAD.

DAVID ASKED MARY, " DID LEO SEE SUPERMAN ?"

DAVID ASKED MARY IF LEO HAD SEEN SUPERMAN.

IV.- IF THE SUBORDINATED SENTENCE MAKES A QUESTION, AND THIS

BEGINS WITH AN ADVERB OR A PRONOUN, THE SAME ADVERB OR

PRONOUN WILL BE THE RELATIVE CLAUSE BETWWEN THE MAIN

AND THE SUBORDINATED SENTENCE.

FOR EXAMPLE:

SUE ASKED MARTHA, " WHEN DO YOU SWEEP THE HOUSE?"

SUE ASKED MARTHA WHEN SHE SWEPT THE HOUSE.

FRED ASKED JEAN, " WHAT HAVE YOU DONE FOR VENEZUELA?"

FRED ASKED JEAN WHAT HE HAD DONE FOR VENEZUELA.

ALI ASKED JOEL,"WHEN DID YOU SWEEP THE APARTMENT?"

ALI SKED JOEL WHEN HE HAD SWEPT THE APT.

V.- THE REPORTED SPEECH IMPERATIVE

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

FOR EXAMPLE:

ALI TOLD MARY, " GO TO THAT MEETING TOMORROW "

ALI TOLD MARY TO GO TO THAT MEETING TOMORROW.

MICHAEL TOLD HIS SISTER, " DON'T WORRY ABOUT ANYTHING "

MICHAEL TOLD HIS SISTER NOT TO WORRY ABOUT ANYTHING.

VI.- THERE ARE SOME OTHER PERSONAL, AND TIME CHANGES :

I CHANGES TO HE , SHE

YOU " " I, THEY, WE, HIM, HER.

WE " " THE, US

MY " " HIS, HER

OUR " " THEIR

ME " " HIM, HER, YOU

US " " THEM, YOU

OURS " " THEIRS

MINE " " HIS, HERS

YOURS " " THEIRS, MINE, OURS

MYSELF " " HIMSELF, HERSELF

OURSELVES " " THEMSELVES

THIS " " THAT

THESE " " THOSE

TODAY " " THAT DAY

YESTERDAY " " THE DAY BEFORE

LAST NIGHT " " THE NIGHT BEFORE

TOMORROW " " THE NEXT DAY, THE FOLLOWING DAY NEXT WEEK " " THE FOLLOWING WEEK

NOW " " THEN

HERE " " THERE
