Museums

Another attraction in the Island is its variety of museums. Surely you want to dedicate some time to observe and share works of art and history of Venezuela.

Typical handicrafts of Margarita and pieces from the Colonial period are found in Asunción at the Nueva Cádiz Library Museum.

This is the most important cultural centre of the State of Nueva Esparta. It was the Municipal House during the XIX century. In this museum are the anchore and several canyons of the Spaniard warship San Pedro de Alcántara, sunk by the Venezuelan patriots in 1815 in waters between the Islands of Coche and Cubagua, south of Margarita.

Here, on the 4th of May of 1810 it was signed the endorsement of the Province of Margarita to the Independence Movement proclaimed in Caracas on the 19th 0f Apeil, 1810.

On Igualdad St. in Porlamar, you will find the Francisco Narváez Museum of Contemporary Arts, with works of Margarita´s plastic artists. It opened in 1977 with over 50 artpieces donated by Narváez, a well known sculptor and painter native from Margarita. Opens from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and frm 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. , free entrance.

In front of Lions Plaza in Pampatar is the Library Museum with its antiques, books and paintings.
If you want to see a beautiful National Monument and have a chance to see a permanent art exhibit, come over to the Custom House in Pampatar, a building constructed in 1863.

It was established as Custom Headquarters in 1905.

In front of Lion´s Plaza in Pampatar, is the Museum Library Rosauro Rosa Acosta with its antiques, books and paintings.

The Venezuelan Museum of Popular Arts is located three minutes away from the city of Juangriego, on the way to the airport.

 

 

It is in a place that resembles a typical small village from last century, with its streets of cobblestone and bahareque houses, in which you can admire a great variety of Artisan´s work and antiques.

Also, go to the Diocesan Museum of Virgin El Valle, located next to her Sanctuary, a beautiful place where you will see the different gifts presented to the Virgin by her faithful followers, for the miracles or favors received.
