Natural Monuments

Another attraction in the Island is its variety of natural monuments of historical and tourist interest.

Visit two famous small twin hills, 103 meters high, whose suggestive appearance reminds the breasts of a woman, called The Tits of María Guevara. According to the legend, María was an attractive and popular girl among the

fishermen of last century. The hills are located in an extensive green xerofile area with bushes and small lakes, formed as
a result of penetration of seawater inside the land. Not far is a small port, Cano Indio, where you can rent boats to sail around La Restinga Lake.

About 12 kilometers away from Porlamar, the State´s capitol city, is Las Marites Lagoon, formerly known as Lagoon of María Salazar, a site declared National Monument in 1974. It is a small and pretty salted water lagoon of shallow waters with an extension of about 3.674 hectares, with small islands separated by water canals and aquatic avenues, plenty of beautiful birds and fishes, and a larger island called El Yaque. It is an ideal place for fishing, skiing and sailing.

Also go to Mt. Guayamuri, a beautiful hill 480 meters high near the town of El Tirano, whose shape resembles the famous Japanese volcano Fujiyama,
because of its pyramidal formation. It was declared a National Natural Monument in 1974.

Visit Mt. Matasiete, also declared as National Monument in 1974. It was the battlefield of the famous Battle of Matasiete, that definitely sealed the independence of the province last century. Going down one of the foothills is a monument built to commemorate the triumph of the Venezuelan troops over the Spaniards led by General Pablo Morillo in 1817. It is a nice place to go walking, since there is not a regular road to drive.
