Castles

Another attraction in the Island is its variety of historical constructions. In the ruins of Fort Santiago de la Caranta you will find remembrances of battles fought in this fort. Originally built in 1586, it was destroyed by pirate Enrico Boduincen in 1626. Later reconstructed in 1663, it offers today a free interpretation of what could have been this part of the Venezuelan defensive system of the time.

Also visit Castle San Carlos de Borromeo, a construction that took 20 years to be built, beginning in 1664. It was the most important castle in the Island for it had the task of defending Porlamar, the Province´s Capitol city.
